9 New HyperOS 4 Features

Before we dive into the list of eligible devices, let’s take a look at all the new features HyperOS 4 brings to the table:

1. New Soft Glass Design

Taking a page out of Apple’s notebook, Xiaomi is adding what it calls the “Soft Light Glass” design to HyperOS 4. This means you get a subtle frosted glass effect across the user interface, which is more prominent than previous HyperOS versions. It is visible across the entire user interface, including widgets, quick settings, folder backgrounds, and more. Also, rather than using the same level of transparency everywhere, Xiaomi claims it can adapt to the content displayed on the screen.

2. Performance Improvements

• Precise Workload Calculation: HyperOS 4 adds a new optimization layer that makes everyday tasks such as opening apps and handling background tasks require less power. It works at the kernel and application layer to reduce load times by 14.4 percent compared to HyperOS 3.
• Better Memory Management: HyperOS 4 uses AI to predict which apps to keep in memory and optimize them based on your needs. Xiaomi calls this the new memory preloading system. It can automatically clear less important apps and prioritize the ones you need. It reduces memory usage by 27.3 percent after eight hours of use compared to HyperOS 3.
• Quicker Multiple App Launches: Remember those smartphone speed test videos that once dominated YouTube? Well, Xiaomi seems to be taking them seriously with HyperOS 4 reducing the time to launch multiple apps in succession. It claims to reduce the time taken to rapidly open 30 apps by 17.5 percent after nine hours of use.
• Reduced Frame Drops: Tired of occasional frame drops and stutters when using your Xiaomi phone? Well, HyperOS 4 plans to reduce them by 28.9 percent after nine hours of usage. So whether you are switching between apps, scrolling through your app drawer, or interacting with other parts of the UI, your phone will be noticeably smoother.
• Faster Image Loading in Gallery: Ever noticed when you scroll through the gallery, the images take a lot of time to load? Well, Xiaomi wants to fix this with the HyperOS 4 update. The time required to load thumbnails has been reduced by 90 percent. So if you click a lot of photos or have a vast photo library, your photos will load a lot quicker.
• Improved Battery Life: Apart from smoother performance, HyperOS 4 will also bring a modest improvement in your battery life. Xiaomi claims that phones will last 15.6 minutes longer with the update, which isn’t much but still a welcome change.

3. Improved Lockscreen Customization

HyperOS 4 also brings better lockscreen customization, and this means you can finally adjust the size of the clock just like other Android skins. But Xiaomi states this feature will not be available on every device. So if you are using a tablet or an entry-level phone, it won’t get this feature. For those using a Xiaomi flagship, you can get a new frosted glass effect. You also get smart home controls on the lock screen with the Integrated Device Center feature, letting you switch between multiple smart homes.

4. Stacked Notifications

If you receive multiple notifications on your phone, they will now appear as a stack similar to iOS and ColorOS. It’s a good measure that reduces clutter and groups similar notifications, making way for other elements on your lock screen. This way, ay you can easily read your clock, wallpaper, and lock screen widgets.

5. Better Homescreen Customization

Just like iOS and ColorOS, you can now stack multiple widgets on the homescreen. You can swipe to switch between these widgets, letting you add multiple widgets without occupying space. The animation for moving icons is also smoother, and speaking of icons, they have been revamped too. You can also choose to resize the home screen folders based on your liking between 1×1, 1×2,2×1,2×2 and 4×2 grid layouts.

6. Revamped Control Centre

Just like the rest of the user interface, the Control Centre has also been overhauled. The icons are now more rounded and have a Liquid Glass effect that lights up when you interact with them. The frosted glass effect looks good and acts like a layered element

• Xiaomi Smart Hub: Similar to Google Home, the Smart Hub lets you control all your Xiaomi devices in a single space. 9. Integration with Apple Ecosystem

The HyperOS 4 update offers deeper integration for Apple users. Here’s how the update will better interconnectivity between Xiaomi and Apple devices:

• Files and Photos Sync: The Touch To Share feature in HyperOS 4 lets you share photos, files, contacts and web pages with iPhone. There’s a two way sync that lets you view photos uploaded to the iCloud and Xiaomi Cloud on either device. This file sharing feature will work similar to AirDrop on iPhones.
• View And Reply to Notifications in Real Time: With HyperOS 4, you can sync notifications to your iPhone and Xiaomi phone in real time and also reply to them. This saves you the hassle of bswitching between phones.This feature will be available in the Home Screen+ app which now supports iPhone, Mac and iPad. You will need Mac running on macOS 12 or later and iPad with iPadOS 14 or later.
• Control Xiaomi Devices With iPad or Mac: The Mi Connect Desktop app lets you control your Xiaomi phone using your iPad or Mac. This way you can control and use your Xiaomi device on a bigger display.
